Weddings are always a special time at the Gallery. I must admit that they are my very favorite thing. As far as a culture, we have very little tradition and ritual. Weddings are one of the few rituals that we partake in and revere. No wedding goes off without last minute adjustments, but that's what makes it exciting.

Tour of the Gila has Started

The Tour of the Gila started this morning at 8:00am with the "Silver City to Mogollon Road Race". The Mogollon Stage has the longest single climb of the five day stage race (2,100 feet).

The Mellow Johnny's team of Lance Armstrong and last years winner Levi Leipheimer is back and so are the world's news crews. Levi finished in first today and Lance in 22nd in Mens Pro 1. Westley Richards came in first for Mens Pro 2. Dean Haas is leading Mens Pro 3. Frank Zoldak is on top for Men 40+ and Mara Abbott is the Womens front runner. Silver City receives a dusting of snow yesterday and this morning. Unseasonably cold temps continuing tonight. Warming up tomorrow, expected High 66. Last night Erika May hosted another great Open Mic at Javalina. Ellen played guitar and sang some fantastic rock covers, and Erika brought the soul with her beautiful Spanish lullabies. Our guests for the evening came out to hear Alice read some of her poetry as well.

Week of the Young Child

This year's Week of the Young Child is celebrated by Wetsern New Mexico's Early Childhood Programs with a series of events honoring children and the people of Grant County who teach and support them. Week of the Young Child is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is celbrated all over the United States. The theme of this year's celebration is "Young Years Are Learning Years."

Activities are scheduled Tuesday through Friday:

Today the Child Development Center will host an Ice Cream Social at 3 p.m. honoring representatives from the Associated Students of WNMU. Wednesday there will be a Student/Family Appreciation potluck hosted by the Early Childhood Education faculty honoring students, teachers, and community members. A Hat Parade by infants to preschoolers will show-off festive hats they have created on Thursday. The week will end with a picnic lunch on the upper playground with children and their families on Friday.

Saturday afternoon Lt. Governor Diane Denish met with small bussiness owners and residents of Silver City at Javalina. She shook hands with every person there and told us a little about what she can do for New Mexico if she is elected. Diane even said she would love to stay with us at Gila House Hotel sometime!

Last night Javalina had a great turn out for open mic. There were preformances by Erika May and Ellen Rusciolelli. The Silver City Slambots preformed a few new pieces that rocked the place.

This morning we lost our beloved puppy Annabelle. We rescued her this last Christmas from a shelter out of Colorado. She was very happy and very loved by our two other dogs, Packo and Lily. Annabelle was the only one of the dogs to let Vanna crawl and play all over her. We will miss her terribly. Rest in peace Annabelle.

Silver City Yellow Bike Project

Silver City has a new public transportation system- bright yellow bicycles. The Yellow Bike Project uses donated bikes as free transportation for the city. The bikes are for ridding, not keeping and are to remain outside and unlocked in public places. Dave Baker, a volunteer for Bikeworks, began the project in Silver City for people to use a bike when needed and leave it for someone else to ride next. Each bike has a sticker explaining their use and a reminder to wear a helmet.

Gila Cliff Dwellings

Approximately 44 miles up State Highway 15 north from Silver City through Pinos Altos is the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The Dwellings offer a look into the homes and lives of the people of the Mogollon culture who lived in the Gila Wilderness from the 1280s through the 1300s. This wilderness is the first designated of it's kind in the United States.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are open from 8am to 6pm,

and the Visitor Center is open from 8am to 4:30pm.

During the Winter, a single tour is offered at noon.

Summer guided tours run daily at 11am and 2pm.

Cafe at the Kumquat

The Curious Kumquat is one of our favorite places in Silver City. It is a quaint little gourmet gorcery and kitchen supply store where College Ave and Bullard St meet. Rob & Tyler Connoley, the proprietors, are very good friends of Gila House Hotel/Gallery 400. Rob catered X'ocotol, the Chocolate Fantasia event we had in February.

They serve gourmet to go and delicious lunch. Our personal favorite is the Oaxan sandwich: chicken mole on sourdough bread with avocado, goat cheese, and green apples. It is heavenly!

Don't forget to look in the refrigerated section for decadent exotic desserts!

Monsoon Puppet Parade

On Saturday, February 13th, Bullard Street in downtown Silver City was crawling with all sorts of wild creatures. In honor of Mardi Gras, Monsoon Puppets fill the streets during the Chocoloate Fantasia festival.

Just before the parade ran, The Fiddling Friends provided wonderful dancing music outside of Yada Yada Yarn on Bullard.

Five Day Festival Weekend

This is a very busy weekend for Silver City. There are festivals and music and CHOCOLATE!! On Saturday, February 13, from 10:30am-3pm the Friends of the Library Book Sale is held at 1510 Market Street. Choose from hundreds of books galore that run anywhere from 25 cents to $5. Also on Saturday is the main Valentine's Day event: Chocolate Fantasia. For $20 per ticket, stroll along Bullard and downtown Silver City through shops, galleries, and hear great music while enjoying gourmet chocolate creations made by local choloatiers from 12n-4pm. The "Running of the Puppets" Parade will start at the Curious Kumquat and march down Bullard to Spring Street Park at 2pm Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening from 6:30- 9pm Gila House Hotel and Gallery 400 will be hosting X'OCOTAL, an evening of extreme chocolate indulgence. The chocolate tasting is $50 for members and $75 for non-members. On Sunday night two local bands are playing for free right across the street from each other. At Javalina, Silver City String Beans will play from 6- 9:30pm and at Isaac's Bar a Valentine's Day party with Rhythm Mystic starting at 8pm with no cover (21+). Richard and Amanda recently added a new member to their growing family. They rescued Annabelle the two year old Dogue de Bordeaux from an organization out of Aurora, CO called Big Dogs Huge Paws as a gift for their six month old Vanna.

Annabelle is already very protective of Vanna and

fits into the family extremely well.

She was welcomed into her new home by Lily, also a Dogue de Bordeaux, and Packo. Lily and Annabelle love to play in the snow and chase each other around outside.

New Look

Last week, we repainted the Upper Gallery of Gila House Hotel & Gallery 400 and rearraneged some of the artwork. Displayed in the Upper Gallery is some of Carlos Aguilar's food-inspired work. Carlos refuses to be "labeled a realist because [his] art is constantly evolving." Also exhibited in this room is artist Reva Myers Shemanski. She paints the way light illuminates the life within each of the objects she captures on canvas. Reva takes photographs and refers to them to achieve the level of realism she desires.

We also moved some of Amanda Yaryan's work into our breakfast room. Amanda uses mixed media, water color, and acrylic paint in many of her pieces. She is originally from Louisiana and has sold much of her work in New Orleans. Her paintings and photos have been published in numerous publications nationwide.

Silver City Museum

I went to the Silver City Museum for the first time and was thoroughly surprised at all of the history this city has to offer. It was opened in 1967, and holds nearly 20,000 objects that chronicle the history of southwestern New Mexico.

Of the historic articles on display, the different kinds of antique type writers are my favorite.

Also very interesting are all of the old newspaper articles and books. It is so intriguing to know what was important to the masses in our past.

Today you'd never see an article with this title...

The Silver City Museum is located at 312 W. Broadway, just 4 blocks west of Hwy 90. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00-4:30, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00-4:00, and closed on Mondays. Admission is $3 per person with a suggested donation. Guided group tours are available through reservation.

Silver City during the winter months is a sight to behold. A light sheet of snow blankets the many bright colored pueblas and inspiration filled art galleries around town. Temperatures in December and January are at a high of 45F and low of 22F, and the average snowfall is about 13 inches every year. According to silvercity.org "Grant County has an almost ideal year-round climate, with plenty of sun and few very hot or very cold days." If you come to Gila House during this grueling weather, there will be hot coffee and a blazing fire waiting to warm your boots.

19th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade

Hot chocolate, light rain, and Santa Claus: the almost perfect combination for the 19th annual Lighted Christmas Parade in Silver City, NM. Natives of this Gila town didn't let a little rain stop them from enjoying their favorite holiday staple.

The parade began with Santa on his lighted firetruck letting all the children know their favorite time of year has arrived! Through Habitat for Humanities version of Santa's workshop, singing Elvis and poodle skirted back-up dancers, and many proud salutes from soldiers of our nations armed forces. The 2009 Lighted Christmas Parade succeeded without a hitch.

Gallery 400 is proud to present new art work by painter Reva Myers Shemanski. Art opening is Friday, November 13, 2009, 6pm - 8pm.

Reva's Artist's Statement: My paintings are about the way light illuminates the life within. Whether it be a human form, a flower, or a stone, the way the light falls upon my subjects shows the path taken to get to this point, the growth and weathering of a thousand experiences. On this map of a journey I can see the handwriting of a learge order of existence and this map is what I render in color, light and shadow. My eyesight is quite limited and I tend to focus on small details that others prehaps overlook. On this microcosmic level, I find it interesting that the shapes that make up any subject are the same.

Although I do take and refer to photographs to achieve the level of realism I desire to paint, I do not project the photographs in any way onto the canvas. these images are my interpretation of what I see.

When the weather is cool and rainy out, what better to do than nibble and nosh. We started off the day right, here at the Gila House with my signature Southwest Quiche. I use crunched up blue corn chips for the crust and pile on layers of sauteed onions, crumbled sausage, and your favorite salsa - any kind will do, but today I used Mrs. Renfros' Pomegranate-Habaneros that I won in a contest. My egg mixture is made rich with a cup of cottage cheese and sour cream. Top that with a cup of grated cheese and bake for about 40 minutes. YUM-O!

To continue this culinary adventure, head downtown and taste your way from shop to coffeehouse to museum. You can warm up with a mulled cider or a Mexican java with cocoa, you can cool down with a gelato or a sip of lemonade. There's vegetarian treats and vegan cheesecake, prickly pear lemon bars and papas tapas. And when you have completed your Walk-About Tour, enjoy a cinemagraphic treat with Babette's Feast at the Silco Theater.

Autumn is officially upon us with her fresh nippy mornings and 2-blanket nights. The days are filled with a golden sunlight that bounces off the flutter of aspen and cottonwood leaves. If you are driving into Silver City on Highway 152 through Hillsboro and over the Emory Pass you will be treated to some wonderful fall scenery. Take a deep breath and smell the musty scents of Autumn as she sweeps in ready for action.

I am very pleased to be showing new work from Fred Yost and Brent Flenniken. We have also started showing a new collection of Mata Ortiz Pottery. You will only find these amazing pieces of art at Gallery 400. The family that creates the pots resides in their ancestral home in the Chihuahua region of Mexico.

A Time for Healing and Sharing

Heirloom Tomatoes, Zucchinis & Basil, Oh My, Oh My

I wish I could paint so that I could capture the true beauty of these heirloom tomatoes. I am very excited to taste them. And see if I can grow my own patch next year. I had a wonderful little chat with the young couple who grew these and I am hopeful, come January or February, that I might see some sprouts from these gorgeous fruits.

For now, they will part of a delicious breakfast tomorrow, along with fresh basil and fresh mozzarella cheese. I also baked some whole wheat bread to go along with. We are celebrating a couple in their seventy who just got married this weekend. Another guest is an organic farmer from Sonoita, AZ. I love meeting folks from all over and learning about what they do and where they have been in their travels. Breakfast is a buffet of lives shared on a sunny Silver morning with heirloom tomatoes.

Is it Julia, the Harvest Season, local chefs and gourmands or inspirations from Gila House guests? What ever it is, I have been consumed by food...and consuming. And I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver.

So it is all coming together into some supremely delicious dishes. The wonderful organic peaches I bought last week from the farmer and his blue-eyed toddler son were truly the Perfect Peach. From that wonderful afternoon when I stopped on a whim, and got to meet this sweet little boy and his proud papa to bringing home my treasure and gently wrapping them in newspaper to ripen in time for guests on the weekend, to the days of pondering what I would do with the peaches that would do them justice and honor their purity to that morning when I finally composed a little masterpiece, the week seemed to fill with the golden hue mirrored in the peaches.

I cannot say enough about buying local. One of the primary reasons I moved to Silver City recently was because of the wonderful Farmer's Market and the home gardeners. When you know who grows your food, you have an intimate relationship, both with your food and with that farmer or gardener. They are producing something that will become part of you and your family.

When the taste of those sweet ripe peaches burst in my mouth, I was transported to a time when the days were more golden, when we did know our neighbors and shared the harvest with baskets of fruits and jars of pickles. The only words that could fully describe that moment when I took my first bite of peach crepe was - "I have died and gone to heaven." But really, I was just doing some time traveling. The 50 or so years that have passed since I last tasted something that moved me so melted away for a bit. I plan on doing some more time traveling and finding those delicious home grown delicacies that bring us all back to a time and place when we were not so distracted from what was really important.

Autumn is in the Air, That Means Good Food & Good Books

The nights are getting cooler and the rain storms are making regular visits each evening. I am noticing that dawn comes a little later each few days. I feel the urge to collect peaches, pears, chilies and all the other harvestings. Is it the squirrel-being in me that wants to collect, store and think about what to make when the weather is nippy?

This weekend, I am taking a Pastry workshop with Chef Rob at Curious Kumquat and I am so eager to see what new ideas and skills I will come away with. Puff pastry is a new favorite staple in my kitchen. My appetizers at the Wine Tasting Club were received to rave reviews, and I feel a bit guilty because they were so easy to make. I am eager to try my hand at some more pastry tricks.

It seems that books go right along with good food and drink. I joined the Museum History Book Club this week and met some fascinating folks. And there was great response to my proposal for a book club focusing maybe on books with a culinary theme. Now, it comes to mind an idea of a Gourmet Book Club. We read books with a food theme and then cook dishes based on the books. Yum! Where shall we start. I can't wait to hear all the book recommendations. Dancing in the Rain

What a delight to have this weekend with rain. I had a great evening on Saturday at the Art Auction/Pot Luck Party for SWANS Fundraiser. SWANS (SouthWest Activities Network Society) in Grant County, New Mexico is a resource for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered human beings in New Mexico. Butch and Charlie were great hosts and quickly handed out towels and skootched us all inside quickly when the clouds let loose.

Today seems like the perfect day to head out with the camera and catch some of the wonderful contract that comes when the forest is wet. I will dance in the rain.

Fresh From The Oven

Life is good when the morning starts off with the aroma of freshly baked bread. I tried that recipe from Mother Earth News and it truly is as easy as they say. The key is KISS - Keep It Sweet & Simple. Well, actually the sweet part is left out. If you do not add sugar to your yeastie beasties, then they do not get drunk.

I made honey whipped butter, using local honey of course and served the loaf with locally produced jelly from La Esperanza Vineyard. This is a treat you can only get at the Gila House.

The Sisters Restaurant in San Lorenzo should be a stop on your tour of our fine region. the sisters have been baking, cooking and playing hostess to guests from around the world for over 20 years. Nancy and Rita have been serving up dishes that take you back to the old days - that translates to homey comfort foods with the flavor of their Italian Heritage. Try to visit them before they close their doors in mid-September.

Now, on to my culinary endeavors. Since coming to the Gila House Hotel Bed & Breakfast as manager, I have been digging into my little bag of tricks and pulling out some of my all time favorite recipes. At a Bed and Breakfast, the Breakfast part of the package is most important and I love firing up the oven early in the morning and smelling that wonderful aroma of muffins and banana bread and coffee cake and sticky buns and....OK, I have to get control of myself.

So, last night I was looking through some recipes for bread, one of my all time favorite things to bake, and turned the page to see a vision of delight - warm, gooey caramel-ly sticky buns. Sticky Buns are so full of wonderful memories for me. In my childhood, they were called Schnecken and my Daddy made them for us. It was a really special occasion when we would wake up on a cool morning and smell that brown sugar and cinnamon. Since I was the oldest, I almost always won the battle over who got to pick the crunchy crumbles from the pan. Well, it is Schnecken making time at the Gila House Bed & Breakfast. I can't wait to hear the lips smackin' and fingers lickin' at our weekend brunch.

Rosemary, oh Rosemary, Where Art Thou?

Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs. The plant is such a pretty bush when it grows big in a pretty clay pot. The scent of rosemary is woody and exotic and flowery all at once. But, the best of all if cooking with it.

Rosemary is truly an ancient herb with so many different uses. "Long known as the herb of remembrance, rosemary symbolizes loyalty and friendship, and has traditionally been associated with both weddings and funerals. Believing the gift came from Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, brides wore it in wreaths as a symbol of their fidelity...Ancient Greeks and Romans knew this shrub well. How perfect! At the Gila House, we are also about friendship and rejuvenating spirits. And I definitely am all for anything that will improve memory. Wish You Could Smell This

I made banana bread this afternoon from a recipe from the Flour Bakery in Boston. The recipe is very similar to a recipe I used about 30 years ago when I had my Bakery, Ruby Mountain Bakery, in Northern California.

The secret ingredient is sour cream. And it is important to beat the eggs and sugar until they are light and foamy. This Banana bread is almost cake like, moist and rich but still light.

I am serving the Banana Bread tomorrow with honeyed cream cheese, fresh melon and baked eggs. Can't wait for breakfast.

Warm Days, Cool Nights

I can feel it in the air. Autumn is just around the corner. Fall is my favorite time of the year. There is a vibrancy in the air that comes from that final burst of energy before we begin to hunker down for the colder days and longer nights.

On one of my evening walks with my dog, I spied a wonderful garden in someones front yard and there like a found jewel was a huge orange pumpkin snuggling among dark green leaves, catching the last of the season's sun. The Chili Harvest seems to start this season off with the heady aroma of green chilies roasting outdoors. This is the aroma of earth and sun and tamales. Soon we will be gathering in the last bountiful offerings from our gardens. Zucchini Bread will be popping out of my oven soon, along with roasted corn cakes topped with chili crema.

I feel like a kid inside, anticipating the chilly nights around a bon fire with good friends. Remembering when I was a youngster running among the adults, playing in the bales of freshly cut hay, stealing my first kiss from the sweet innocent distant cousin.

Catch a Falling Star

This week is the Perseids and what a better place than Silver City to get out and watch this amazing meteor shower. There is something magical about watching the sky light up with streaks of silvery sparkles. You can be 6 or 60 and still be amazed by this phenomenon. You have to stop and think about how we are all part of something so much bigger. Get out with some friends and see who can catch the most falling stars.

I would like to add to that the commitment and dedication of folks here to local produce, organic gardening, the slow food movement, and stewardship of the land. You can walk just about any street in town and see wonderful gardens full of herbs, flowers, and vegetables. The Farmers' Market every Saturday is so vibrant with freshly picked veggies, free-range eggs, and freshly baked goodies. The saying, "You are what you eat" should be a Silver City motto - Silver City Folks eat good and they are good folks.

Aroma of Freshly Roasted Hatch Chilies

This weekend is a big Hatch Chili Sale in Silver City and already there are folks ahead of the game with their boxes of bright green chilies, getting them roasted. I am new to Silver City; I just moved here from Phoenix - yeah, it IS hotter then hell there. And before that I was living in Maine and along the Northshore of Massachusetts, so I am basically fresh off the boat. I love Silver City and New Mexico. The rich Mexican and Spanish heritage of this area reminds me of eating a deep chocolate layer cake with fillings of orange, raspberry and cream. Each bit awakens your senses and brings you a surprise.

Hmm, I think I have food on the brain tonight. I am really getting into finding and adapting recipes for our Guests' breakfast. Tomorrow I am making a Mexican Quiche with a corn chip crust and layers of chorizo, green chili salsa and lots of cheese - and all of that gets drowned in a seasoned egg mixture and baked until it is brown and bubbly.

Our guests this weekend are here for a family reunion. I love hearing the stories of what Silver City area was like back in the 50's. I am looking forward to having a chance to chat with the folks that grew up here and listen to their stories.

This is what makes managing a B&B really worthwhile; knowing that I am creating a little homey space with good cooking, good conversation, and good beds at night.

So, now I am off to my bed so I can get up early and make that Mexican Quiche.

Gila House Happenings

My first blog entry as the new Manager of the Gila House Hotel and Gallery 400 in Silver City. I came to The Gila House about a month ago from Phoenix, AZ. It is like moving to Eden. So many friendly folks, a great co-op, a wonderful Farmers' & Artists' Market every Saturday. And so many trees.

I would call Silver City one of the best kept secrets - and a lot of folks are finding out about this secret. Yes, we are a bit off the beaten path, but that can be a good thing. And once you get to Silver City and check into the Gila House you can be in the thick of it if you want. We are just blocks from really nice restaurants like Isaacs and the Curious Kumquat - don't you just love that name? The Gila House is right in the middle of the Historic Downtown and Arts District. There is always something fun and funky going on. This Saturday, there is a Street Dance in the evening. Now how fun is that?
